The story takes place on the continent of Archanea, which is threatened by the kingdom of Dolhr, led by the evil shadow dragon Medeus who seeks to conquer the world. Humans cannot fight against dragons, but there was a legendary knight named Anri who was able to slay the evil dragon Medeus with the sacred sword Falchion, bringing peace back to Archanea. However, many years later, the evil dragon Medeus is resurrected with the support of the powerful wizard Gharnef, who has ambitions of world domination. The army of Dolhr destroys the kingdom of Archanea, leading to fear and despair. The king of Altea, a descendant of the royal family of Anri, possesses the legendary sword Falchion and attempts to follow in the footsteps of his ancestor. But before he can slay Medeus, he is betrayed by his former allies from the kingdom of Gra. In the ensuing chaos, Altea falls, and Falchion is lost. The young prince Marth, only 14 years old, is forced to flee to the kingdom of Talys. Though he is warmly welcomed there, he dreams of returning to his homeland to free the kingdom from oppression. He gathers an army and fights to reclaim his kingdom. On his 16th birthday, when a band of pirates led by Galdar attacks Talys Castle, Marth teams up with Princess Caeda and some soldiers from Altean to try to drive the pirates out.
