Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan: The Rise of the Mongol Nation

Genghis Khan was born as Temüjin Borjigin. His father was the leader of the Borjigin clan of the Mongol people but was assassinated when Temüjin was only 9 years old. Members of his father's clan abandoned the family, leaving his mother to care for him and his brothers during a life of poverty. His mother taught him the skills of survival and the importance of forming strong alliances.

By forming an alliance with Toghril, the Khan of the Kereit tribe, Temüjin gathered an army of 20,000 soldiers and defeated the Merkit tribe. His power steadily grew, and he eventually conquered the Tartars, killing all the adults to prevent any future uprisings. However, not long after, Temüjin and Toghril fell into conflict, and Toghril joined the Naiman tribe, one of the last remaining rival tribes. Temüjin defeated the Naimans, and in 1206, he became the leader of the Great Mongol Empire, adopting the title "Genghis Khan," meaning "universal leader," marking the beginning of the Mongol Empire.

Genghis Khan's success was largely due to the political and military reforms he introduced. He accepted people from different ethnic groups and emphasized equality, not discriminating against religions, allowing people to practice their faith freely. He promoted individuals based on merit, rather than family ties, and granted greater autonomy to those who remained loyal to him.

Genghis Khan was also highly adaptable to changing circumstances. Although the Mongols were known for their horseback warfare, it became clear that this would not be effective in sieging cities. As a result, he employed Chinese engineers to develop siege weapons, such as ladders and catapults, allowing the Mongol army to successfully lay siege to fortresses and further expand the empire.
