Through mining you can obtain rare ores and materials, which is necessary for tool and construction upgrades. Mining is first unlocked when visiting the Mines north of the dinosaur skeleton in Swoosh Falls. There, Smitty and Blake will give you an introduction to mining and you can later collect your first pickaxe from Blake.
Mining Basics
To mine, simply strike the earth with the pickaxe and you will be rewarded with materials. Additionally, you may unearth a rope leading deeper into the mines. Better materials can be found the further in you go, so you'll want to seek out these ropes when you can. This can be time and stamina consuming, so one trick is to save when you get to a new floor, and if it is taking you some time to find the rope you can always reload and try again. You can also exit the mine and take a nap to recover your stamina, and re-enter and you'll be able to pick up where you left off. This only applies on the same day, however; the mine progress resets each day.
Earth Patch Colors
As you go further into the mines, you'll also encounter different colored patches of earth, which will require a stronger pick to break through. You will need the Copper Pick to break through grey patches, and a Silver Pick to break through black patches.
For the entrance to B5F, there will be a mix of brown and grey earth patches. Starting at B5F you will start encountering black patches. On B6F, the floor will be all grey and black, with no brown patches.
