The Black Monster plays a major role in the storyline of The Legend of Dragoon. It has been the personal goal of the main character Dart to destroy this demon to avenge the death of his parents. The Black Monster shows up every 108 years when the Moon That Never Sets glows red, signaling the appearance of the Moon Child who is said to fill the world with holy bliss.
The true purpose of the Black Monster is to stop the merging of the soul of the Virage Embryo, or the God of Destruction, and its body and to kill all that have come in contact with the Moon Child. The Black Monster is revealed later on in the game to be the Dark Dragoon Rose.
