The story takes place in the kingdom of Ivalice, which is characterized by castles and fortresses serving as strongholds for the nobles. During this time, the church plays a significant role in both religious and political affairs, while various factions continue to fight for territorial control. Amidst this tense atmosphere, peasants and common people are viewed merely as lower-class and akin to serfs, leading many to abandon their former lives to join rebellions against the nobles who have abandoned them after the war.

The main character is Ramza Beoulve, the youngest brother among four siblings. He possesses a keen awareness of his surroundings and is determined to uncover the truth behind the war. He journeys alongside his close friend, Delita Hyral, and Agrias Oaks, a holy knight responsible for protecting Princess Ovelia, who has the potential to be the heir to the throne of Ivalice.

The story begins as Ivalice is recovering from a fifty-year war with Ordalia, which has created a power vacuum following the death of the ruling monarch. King Ordalia has sparked a new conflict, with Princess Ovelia and Prince Orinas as the contenders for the throne. Both sides are backed by powerful nobles, such as Prince Goltana of the Black Lion and Queen Ruvelia, as well as Prince Larg of the White Lion, who is Ovelia's brother.

This conflict is known as the "Lion War," in which both factions employ any means necessary to secure their positions on the throne. Extramarital affairs, assassinations, and betrayals become tools in the struggle for power, significantly impacting the future of the kingdom.
