In the remaster, you can carry over items to a new game at any time using data from the previous game, including anything that Herman has. Place whatever you want to be copied on Herman, then fight Forneus with him in your party and win. After the victory, Herman will change to Black, and the equipment he had will be copied to the same slots in Black's equipment menu. This way, you can get multiple copies of rare equipment, but for shields and armor, you can only equip one type.
