Joel, a hardened man, is tasked with accompanying a teenage girl, Ellie, on a perilous journey across the United States to a group of scientists who hope to use her immunity to develop a cure for the plague. Their journey is filled with obstacles: the infected turn into monsters, other survivors willing to do anything to survive, and Joel and Ellie's relationship slowly changing.
