Suikoden V takes place in a kingdom called Falena, which is ruled by a royal system. The protagonist of the game is Lyonel, who has the mission of restoring peace to the kingdom after political turmoil and internal family conflicts within the royal family. The story focuses on forming alliances with various characters to address the issues arising in the kingdom. The gathering of the "108 Stars of Destiny" is a central theme of the game, just like in the previous installments of the series.
