Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is a remake of the Game Boy Advance games Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (FoMT) and Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town (MFoMT). The original FoMT game had a male protagonist, and the original MFoMT game had a female protagonist plus a few additional improvements. This new Switch version combines both games along with updated graphics and gameplay improvements while keeping to the original village, farm, and nostalgic environment that fans expect in a Mineral Town game.
This entry into the Bokujou Monogatari series begins the same as the 2003 original FoMT game. As a child, you spend a vacation on your grandfather's farm, helping him care for his crops and animals, and even making a childhood friend. After grandfather passed away, the Mineral Town mayor sends a letter to invite you back to care for the old farm.
The plot of the game is to revive grandpa's farm in whatever way you would like. The game does not have a defined storyline to follow and only ends if you turn down Mayor Thomas' offer at the beginning of the game. Players can freely move through the game at their leisure.
While the game mostly stays true to its original GBA form, there have been some updates to bring the game more in line with modern-day Story of Seasons games. For example, players can choose between playing the game in Normal mode or in Simple (easier) mode during character creation.
Story of Season: Friends of Mineral Town includes the same characters as the early-2000s game, though their appearance has been updated. Igusa Matsuyama, the primary artist for the Bokujou Monogatari series, designed both the classic styles and the updated designs. Another change is the switch from using the original English-adaptation character names to using the original Japanese character names.
Other changes from the GBA game include:
- Same-sex marriage and two new marriage candidates
- Marriage candidates have two new romantic heart events
- Items stack within the rucksack, making inventory management easier to handle
- Mining has been made easier with the addition of pitfall holes and elevators
- Crops now have a star-rank quality (1 star through 5 stars)
- New crops such as soybean and chili pepper
- The protagonist can now walk over the top of the crops
- The animal barns have herding bells on the exterior wall to bring all animals out of their barns with a single chime
- New farm animals include Angora Rabbit, Brown Chickens, Alpaca, Strawberry cow, Fruit cow, and Coffee cow
- The horse can run outside of the farm
- More pet options are available besides the standard dog such as different varieties of dogs, cats, capybara, and penguin
- The mirror inside of the farmhouse is available for predefined clothing customization.
- A new park area between the livestock farm and the town's Inn.
