RockMan X takes place in a future world where robot and android technology has advanced significantly. Robots with consciousness and emotions, known as "Reploids", have been created, capable of developing their minds and skills just like humans. However, not all Reploids are able to control their abilities effectively. In RockMan X, we meet X, the protagonist, a robot created by Dr. Light (the same scientist who created the original Mega Man) to have the ability to make independent decisions through his own consciousness. X must confront a rebellion led by a group of rogue robots called the Mavericks, led by Sigma, a robot who was once an ally of X but turned against humanity, aiming to destroy the world.
