The hero Quan, a prince descended from the crusader Njörun, lives in the small kingdom of Leonster on the Thracian peninsula. As the conflict to unify Jugdral rages, and a new age of turmoil begins, Quan and his wife, Ethlyn, march their army to the aid of Sigurd, an ally facing difficulties in Aed. But Quan and his beloved meet a tragic end as they are ambushed by Thracian forces and massacred. Leonster's hope appears to die with them, as Thracia marshals the entirety of its forces in an attack on Leonster Castle. Quan's son, the young prince Leif, narrowly escapes death and, with the aid of the knight Finn, finds safe haven in Fiana, a tiny frontier village on the eastern coast of the peninsula. In the year 776 of the Grann Calendar, at just 15 years of age, Leif must defend Fiana from attack, muster an army of retainers and rebels, and wage war against the tyranny of Grannvale to restore Leonster.
